I think we have a similar species resident in my urban American neighborhood–only we call them Sharp-shinned hawks. Wreak great havoc among the little birds 🙂 They haven't showed up yet this spring; for the past two or three years they perch high in the trees and skriek noisily, I think about their nest. Hope they come back.

Hi Melissa,
Yours is a close relative. The Sparrowhawk's technical name is Accipiter nisus, and I've just googled the Sharp-shinned hawk which is (apparently) Accipiter striatus. As for the little birds, I've seen sparrowhawks streaking across our garden in hot pursuit of some poor thing or other. Every other bird around scatters, leaving 'lunch' to it.
