This is more or less the identical shot that I used to open Tuesday's post. What a difference a little sunshine makes.
The birds excelled themselves and I really am spoilt for choice today. Juvenile herring gull with a plastic cap (fortunately it didn't try to swallow it)
Whooper swan, dozing at the edge of the water
A flock of black-headed gulls (to make up for not posting yesterday's shots)
Coot on the run
A great-crested grebe about to dive
For all those shots, I spent most of my time watching a pair of cormorants high in the treetops on the far side of the lake. Cormorants, and herons that is… sharing the space.
That's the first time I've seen cormorants in trees, and watching them perch alongside herons is really quite a bizarre sight. Both species have a deeply atavistic aspect to them.
Is this really central London in the 21st century?
Lastly. the little male fox came by a second time last night and I caught a little bit of the visit on video. I'll try to process the footage at the weekend. Here's a very brief snippet for now 😉
Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 400D and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens. Video footage taken with the Panasonic FZ45.

5 Feb 2011Darko, well it certainly knew where I was. It had been watching us through the window for several minutes before that clip 😉

5 Feb 2011Just need a marabou stork or two flying around, and the impression will be complete!

5 Feb 2011Oh yes, one of those would be cool. I can just see it down by the Thames, stalking the Tower.
