The past couple of days have been shrouded in mist, with little opportunity to venture out with the camera. Even the garden has been quiet. The snow has gone, but it took until today for the pond to thaw.
The pond is a narrow, pre-fabricated kidney pond of around 6 feet in length. My assumption is that it froze solid (or nearly so). Once the snow had cleared the submersed plant life and debris provided a colourful palette, gently distorted by the frozen surface.

The plant life provides a certain amount of protection for the pond creatures. I've not seen any frogs or newts yet (they are likely to be hibernating on land), but the small snails seem to have survived, and the population of damselfly nymphs is in excellent shape.
Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 40D and EF 24-105 F4L IS USM lens, with the exception of the damselfly nymph which was taken with the EF 100mm f/2.8L macro IS USM lens.

31 Dec 2010All is grey and flat and Novemberish here :right:
Amazing colours! Ice can be very artistic. Our pond didn't freeze because the water is pumped round.

31 Dec 2010"colorful palette, gently distorted by the frozen surface", apt description and exotic looking too.

1 Jan 2011Thanks Andy! I really should clear the pond out, but the wildlife doesn't really seem to mind too much.

1 Jan 2011Adele, thanks! I wanted something colourful to counteract the constant grey we've been having.
