Watchful Bunny

Not much to report today, other than constant wind and rain. It really did not feel like spring. Cold, wet, miserable and a day to stay out of the weather. The local wildlife doesn’t really have that luxury though, and early this morning I spotted a rabbit in the local churchyard at Falmer. It’s an adult and was keeping a very watchful eye on what was happening.

It took me a few moments to see why she was being so attentive, but then – almost hidden in the long grass – the answer became clear. There were several young rabbits enjoying an early morning munch. This one popped its head up just long enough for a quick photo.

Moorhen on a Wall

There will be a couple more gosling photos today, but I’m going to start with a short sequence of an adult moorhen. It was quietly dozing on top of a leaf-clad wall when I arrived at Falmer Pond this morning (in light drizzle).

My arrival must have been the signal to start the day, with a nice stretch of the legs and wings. Morning exercise, but not too rigorous.

It hopped down after that and scuttled away into the water. I scuttled back to the car to get out of the rain.

The recent pattern of grey damp mornings and milder, sunny days continues and things were a little brighter by lunchtime which is when I took these photos of the young greylag goslings. Cute as ever, so I’m making the most of them while they are still balls of fluff. The good news is that the original eight goslings are still all alive and kicking. I thought we may have lost one, but a quick count today put that fear to bed.

As you can see, they’re a very happy little group!

More Goslings

After the long weekend it was obvious I was going to head back to Falmer Pond to check out all the young life. The moorhen chicks are still doing well, but photographically the greylag goslings stole the show, even in the early morning drizzle.

It eventually brightened up, so I was able to get a few more shots later in the day.

Two more photos to complete today’s entry. The first is just a nice shot of a blackbird fluffing its feathers.

And I still think the pond rats are cute 😉
