After some very quiet days (yesterday I only managed two frames in total), I was delighted to see a kestrel hovering directly over our garden this evening. It was quite high, but worth a quick photo. Although they fly overhead quite frequently, it's less usual to see them so obviously in hunting mode over the gardens. Kestrel
Later, the Bold vixen came by and discovered a small egg (pigeon?) that had appeared on the ground. It had already been broken into so she sniffed and eventually left it be. I may have more about how the egg got there on the trail cam (I don't think it was there when I set the camera up, and it should be in view). That'll have to wait until tomorrow. Vixen with small egg
I also finally got a shot I've been after for some time now. She has a habit of exiting the garden over the garage roof, and clearly is unperturbed by the steep drop on the far side. Until tonight she's been rather too nimble for me to capture a decent shot of her up there, but I was semi-prepared this time and had moved around to get a good line if she did decide to go out that way. Rooftop vixen
Camera note: the kestrel was photographed with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens. Both vixen photos were taken with the EF 24-105 F4L IS USM lens.

12 Jun 2009Could this big spot on her hip be a "scar" from mange, maybe?

I see kestrels flying over my garden sometimes but generally very high up.

13 Jun 2009Darko, I'm not aware that she's had mange, although there are gaps in my tracking of her. I suspect it's more likely to be the summer moult plus scratching and clawing by her cubs. They always look a bit tatty this time of year!

13 Jun 2009Lois, it's not actually that high the way the walls and gardens are round here, but there's something special about a fox on a roof.

13 Jun 2009Adele, rooftops run in her family. It's quite an easy route for them actually, but I love seeing foxes up high like that.
