Yesterday's late night visit by the vixen meant that I didn't get to post the shots that I had taken during the day. And given that today has been overcast, snowy, and I haven't seen any foxes I have precious few images of today. So here's a few more from Friday.
The first is a black-headed gull. There were several of these circling around the local park when I went out to buy milk. I don't often see them there, and presume the weather has forced them to find new feeding grounds. Black-headed gull
Even less common in residential areas are fieldfares, but as I was crossing the park (it's just a small park), I noticed something fly overhead and grabbed a very quick shot. The photo had me searching through my field guides to check the identification, but I think I've got it right. Fieldfares are desperately shy birds and only come near inhabited areas when food is scarce. So a nice surprise. Fieldfare
I've spent today sorting through last night's fox photos. Here are a couple more…
It's been snowing again this evening, and although more snow is forecast for tomorrow it looks as though things may improve over the next few days, with the temperature getting back above zero. So I may even be able to get the car moving again by the middle of the week. We'll have to see.
Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 40D. The birds were photographed with the EF70-300mm 4.5-5.6 DO IS lens, and the fox with the EF 24-105 F4L IS USM lens.

10 Jan 2010Have you seen any other foxes around since you have so much snow around? They must be hungry :left:

10 Jan 2010Oh, I love the first vixen photo – orange and white, stunning!
Eh, thrushes in flight…the grey on fieldfares is usually more noticeable, but that might just be the angle. Certainly the white belly and flecked sides hint that way.
Nice portrait of the gull, too 🙂

10 Jan 2010Wow thats a nice catcj of the fieldfare well done! The Snowy Vixen photos are lovelly, wouldnt it be cool if they covered themselves in it like Benjie does 😆
Benjie got groomed a week ago and not suprisingly he didnt bury himself as much in the snow, brrrrr! 😛
Looks like East Sussex might get more snow today but hopefully you can dig your car out soon, it better clear up by Feb hehe.

10 Jan 2010Adele, the fieldfare i.d. is based more on the colouring around the wing, plus the lack of speckling underneath (I'd expect more on a mistlethrush, which was my alternative). That's a fairly hefty crop so I don't have anything better to go on. The gulls were easier (a couple even had most of their summer plumage!).
I still hope to get more photos of the vixen while the snow stays settled.

10 Jan 2010Darko, there's been one other fox on the trail cam (a male), but other than that I've not seen any other foxes. I've not been out looking though!

10 Jan 2010Mark, it would be great to see foxes really playing in the snow. I hope Benjie isn't too cold at the moment. :smurf:
We had a bit more snow last night, so everything looks fresh again. I reckon I should be ok by mid-week.
