Sunshine today, and no wind. Perfect for a stroll along the beach at Rottingdean. I don't often focus on them, but they were dominating the cliff face this afternoon and are worth an occasional mention here. They tend to roost alongside the fulmars, and unlike London pigeons have something of an aversion to people; well, to the extent that they don't mob every passing human in the hope of food.

The fulmars were of course also in their usual mode of skimming the cliff. Just a couple of shots today.

Down on the shore itself gulls were gathering among the exposed rocks, but it was a larger bird that caught my attention. A pair, in fact. Of little egrets. The shot is terrible! The dark seaweed that covers the rocks creates havoc with exposure settings, especially when the subject is pure white. These are the best of a fairly bad lot!

The final shot was taken at the village pond, which is a short walk along Rottingdean High Street, opposite Rudyard Kipling's home (now a museum). The light was fading by this time, forcing a slow shutter speed.

  1. Beautiful picture.
I envy you for it, that you live near the sea.
Since I would like to live.
It would also be the mountains nearby.

  2. I really like how you captured the water drops in the last photo.

  3. They seem to have same movements as dogs when shaking a water drops off 😀

I know Pigeons are a bit like Marmite, but I like them :D.

The slow shutter speed on the duck photo makes it look like it's got hair! Brilliant 🙂

  5. Nice to see the egrets! And the contrast in the first shot makes it kind of dramatic 🙂

It's nice to see polite pigeons sometimes 😉

  6. Adele, the contrasts when the tide is out are so tricky. It's a matter of guesswork most of the time (and manual settings are essential). Nice to see a pair of them there.

  7. Steffi, the sea and mountains would be a wonderful combination!

  8. Mick, the light was really poor by the time I took that last shot, but the slow shutter speed sort of works ok. Thanks!

  9. Gaina, thanks! Glad you like the pigeons. As for the duck LOL! I see what you mean.

  10. Erwin, thanks!

  11. Darko. I nearly missed your comment! Sorry. Yes they're just like dogs the way they shake the water out. 😀

  12. Lovely
