Not just any sandwich, but a small flight of sandwich terns enjoying the hottest day of the year down at Rottingdean. It was their calls that first caught my attention, a distinctive sound among the shrieking of the gulls. There were maybe a dozen or so, flying circuits and diving to the sea after fish.

I wasn’t able to get nearly close enough for anything to spectacular, but these may give an idea of the action.

  1. Terns are very difficult subjects … these shots are remarkable!

    1. dW, thanks! They were a real treat to watch. Many wasted shots, but worth persevering.

  2. I remember seeing them in Mexico 3 years ago. I could make photos while they are flying but diving into the ocean was mission impossible. As dW sad, there are remarkable good

    1. Darko, thanks! The trick is to watch them for a while and see how they behave just before they dive. Then stick on one and wait while it hovers. And repeat… 😉
