Last night I posted a couple of snatched, low quality, shots of one of the adult foxes. I did rather better today, so he is taking pride of place in tonight's blog. There are two foxes who appear on the trail cam, so I can't be certain which one he is but I have been aware of him lurking in the undergrowth when I've been photographing the cubs at night. He also appears very soon after I go inside (trail cams are great for showing what you can't see). These shots were taken through our back door, so the quality is slightly degraded by the double glazing. The time was just around 8pm tonight, with the sun lowering in the sky and drawing out the rich colours of a summer evening. Enjoy!

This is his first appearance, still in the shadows…

As I watched, he started to move down the garden towards the house.

I wanted him to move across to the south side of the garden which was still bathed in the evening sunshine. This is why.

I'll get back to the cubs tomorrow, but to be honest he caught the best of the light and anything else I post will look drab in comparison.
Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 7D and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens.

  1. Looks like she could use a good feeding-up and a bit of rest. Having four kids ain't fer sissies.

  2. She indeed looks very weary :worried:

  3. Oh my, she looks skinny and tired :left:

  4. It's odd how some of them look more dog-like than others. She's got a fairly solid head for a vixen. Not in the best condition, but it's a tough time of year.

  5. Sami, she should be getting a bit more of a rest now the cubs are becoming a little more independent.

  6. dW, she's a skinny thing, for sure; but will fill out and improve her coat as the summer goes on.

  7. Darko, a lot of the skinny look is down to her moult, but she does look tired.

  8. Adele, from the trail cam footage I get it seems there must be a lot of competition between the adults as well as coping with the cubs.
