I've been so busy watching the cubs that I haven't really had time to say too much here. So here goes….
The best estimate I can make about their age is that they were born between 7th and 13th March, probably nearer the 7th. This is based on photos of Kinky (one of the vixens), and her disappearance for several days over that period. The cubs started to emerge from the earth about 10 days ago, and are rapidly getting much bolder and are now extending their territory to the middle of the garden. I think there are 7 of them… at least I have seen seven at once on one occasion. Usually I see three or four out together, and occasionally just one on its own.
The adults are only rarely visible while the cubs are out. While I was watching this evening there were four of them playing. No adult in sight. That said, there does seem to be a method of communication. After several minutes I heard a low grunting coming from the other side of the fence. The cubs heard it too and all made a mad dash towards it. Actually, their sense of navigation isn't too great yet and they dashed straight at me (I was between them and the noise) before circling around and taking the long way round to the fence. They're small enough to get under it, and sure enough they disappeared. I presume that was Mama calling the kids in.
In addition to photos I've been taking video clips, and there's another one from tonight on my site. I'm also posting them over on YouTube which is about a third of the file size.
This photo is from earlier tonight.
