Since I mentioned that we've cut down on putting out food for the fox cubs, I guess I ought to say a bit more about what they do eat. Mainly their diet consists of small bugs, especially the May Bug which is plentiful at the moment. They'll also eat worms, slugs and pretty much anything else that crawls.

One speciality treat they seem to like are the snails, which gather on walls and along the edge of the pond. I caught a few snaps of one of the cubs fishing for them tonight. He'd managed to dislodge one from the pond edge and it was floating a few inches out. He tried several times to draw it in closer with his paw, but on this occasion eventually gave up in favour of something on dry land.

Oh, and well done Australia for qualifying for the next stage of the World Cup. But cripes! Where the heck did you that goalkeeper from? Cracking game though!

Hi Words, great photos – never seen a cub go fishing before! Out of interest, have you seen the vixen showing them what they should be eating?

  2. Hi,

He nearly fell in a couple of times. I fear for this one if he starts climbing the trees 😉

Haven't seen too much of the vixen, apart from fleeting glimpses. She keeps well out of sight most of the time, though she did spend a good deal of time taking food back to the earth when they were smaller so I'm sure she's been taking care of their education. I just haven't seen it 🙁

Last year, the dog fox used to share food with a cub. For the first couple of months he'd let the youngster bully him away from whatever we left out, but as autumn approached the adult became more aggressive and the cub was driven out to pastures less green.

  3. I hope the back pain that you are experiencing is subsiding.

World Cup…not very popular in my area. Since I have seen so much of it on the Opera Web sites I actually watched it on TV for a few minutes.
Funny too, my wife walked in when I was watching it and asked if I was OK. 😆
Who is the favorite to win? (See how much I know!)

  4. Wow, what a interesting photo series with the fishing fox. I don't know that before…

    Greetings
    Elke

Isn't it fox Pups? Cubs are applied to bears and cats.
