Another near first for me today. I've seen grey wagtails once before, but only in a breeding aviary at the Wildlife and Wetlands Trust in Arundel. So this is my first sighting of one in the wild. It was flitting above a small enclosed garden at work.

Grey Wagtail

You might ask why this spectacularly yellow bird is called the grey wagtail. It gets its name from the upper body colour, which is slate in colour. Plus there's an even more brilliantly coloured species which lays claim to the 'yellow' tag. The garden where I saw this one is dominated by sparrows which flit among the ornamental trees and feeders. They are typically unconcerned about people being around.

Sparrows

As for the home front…

The newts are still active

And the shy fox made another appearance.
The photo of the fox (the same one as yesterday) was taken at a distance, hence the distinctive eye-shine. It paused in the garden for a few moments and although it didn't approach too close it is certainly becoming less wary of the camera.

Camera note: all shots taken with the EF70-300mm 4.5-5.6 DO IS lens, except the newt which was with the Sigma 105mm F2.8 EX DG macro.

  1. Everyday you take beautiful photos:up: congratulations:up:

  2. Lovely grey wagtail! We have a few pairs around here but I've never got a picture of one. They're too quick off the mark :insane:

I like the busyness of the sparrow picture, too 🙂

  3. Always nice to see sparrows 🙂

  4. Darko, such busy little birds. Always great to watch.

  5. Adele, I was mainly photographing the sparrows which were down at eye level. I'm glad I glanced up though. It was perched there for a few moments before flying off.

  6. Thanks ZT 🙂
