After the weekend posts a slight change of emphasis. Gone are the deep brown tones of night photography and in its place some brighter (if not quite sunny) shots of birds. First a duck among the daisies.

And now some photos of sparrows. For what was once one of our most common urban birds they are now, if not exactly scarce, much reduced in number (an estimated 60+% decline in the past 40 years). They are, as a result, red-listed as being of high conservation concern.

  1. I didn`t know that about sparrows :left: Is it due to some disease or pollution? Luckily we still have a lot of them in Belgrade but I don`t think anyone really took care about their number.

  2. Darko, I think it's mainly due to loss of urban habitat where there are fewer gardens and hedges. And changes in farming in the countryside have also had an impact. There are still lots of them, but not as many as when I was growing up.

  3. Erwin, thanks!

  4. Now that you`ve mentioned that, I tried to pay attention. It seems they are decreased in numbers here too. Only pigeons and crows remain the same :left:

  5. Yes a beautiful set of Pict
