In a recent post a question came up about our garden pond. It's small, clogged with weed and leaves, but seems an extremely fertile location for frogs and newts. It seems to thrive on semi-neglect (I do clear the leaves and thin out the weed occasionally). As well as the newts and frogs, the pond supports a wide variety of insect life, though it tends to be too small to be a major attraction to dragonflies. Damsels do make use of it though.

As for size, it's only a couple or so feet wide at most points and undulates all of about 10 feet. I'd been meaning to photograph it, and tonight the old dog fox provided the perfect opportunity. At the far end (to the right in the first photo) the depth is only about 6 inches. The near end has a small area which is about 3 foot deep, but there are several planting ledges around the edge which means most of it is quite shallow.

  1. A bonnus evening! Nice shots Words 🙂
Evendently it is the right environment to attract them.

OHhh.. and I learned something on the lens.. it's definitely the,,, ahemmmmmm, user! I didn't realize that if you get to close with that lens it will not let you take the shot.

It's darned near Bitzy Proof!

  2. I particularly like the ledge balancing shot…very agile!

  3. Vulpes, the old fox is fine. We've had cubs slip occasionally. Big splash and out again, doing that thing dogs do by pretending they meant to do it all along 🙂

  4. Bitzy, oh yes… minimimum focus distances. They can be so annoying at times.

  5. I know excactly what you mean.. on the lens .. and actually the dogs too .. their expressions. They are more like us than we care to think

  6. He looks like he's become a tour guide for the evening! Ten feet is a good length. Our pond is only about five feet long, but the "stream" / channel is, er, about 15 feet I think (I'm terrible at estimating distances).

  7. I should check the length, but I think it's roughly that. It was here when we moved in, but sparkling clear and full of fish (which were safely re-homed).

  8. Lovelly pics:D I bet the Newts and Frogs dive for cover when he is coming near lol:P
