A rare spot of sunshine brought out the butterflies. Here's a selection, with more added toward the end of my Insects and Bugs gallery.

Brown argus

Peacock on teasel

I think it's a small heath (left) and comma

Holly blue (female)

Small white (female)

There were also some dragonflies on the wing, massing over near some woodland. They refused to settle so I didn't get any photos, but I'm reasonably sure they were hawkers of some variety. None by the pond (I've yet to see a 'common' darter this year!), but I'll count today's sighting as progress.

As for the foxes, it's been quiet for a few days. Nicked-ear has passed through most nights, but studiously avoided the camera either by ducking under or clambering over a fence.

Camera note: all shots taken with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens.

  8. Thanks for all the comments. We have several good locations for butterflies so they're fairly easy to find. Very few red admirals though this year, which is a surprise.

  15. Great photo of the Holly Blue. Reminded of the books by Herbie Brennan where the main characters are all named after butterflies.

  17. Nice Butterflies 😀 I noticed that there are fewer of them around than last year.

  18. Thanks Mark. I can't really tell whether there are fewer about over all, but there definitely seem be fewer red admirals.
