With the clocks going back I was greeted by blue skies this morning, and the morning moon was high in the western sky. I've used this technique before and it's still one of my favourite methods of getting good shots of the moon. You start with a true daylight shot.
You then convert it to monochrome (and adjust the contrast).
And then crop down. This is a 100% crop (ie the full size image as caught by the camera).
Camera note: these are all edits of the same shot, taken with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens.

29 Oct 2007I wish I could remember where I first read about the technique. It's so simple but nearly always does the trick. I'll speculate that it's because the camera doesn't have to struggle with the intense contrasts of night shots.

30 Oct 2007Waning gibbeous…stunning! You can see the big crater Tycho on the lower left, and all its impact rays spiraling outwards. Must have been an impressive collision that caused that!
Thanks for the tips. I'll try it myself sometime! I didn't do much to my last moon picture except use Adobe's unsharp mask on it, which brings out a little more detail (if used with care!)

31 Oct 2007Adele. Thanks for the crater i.d. I used to have a plastic moon globe back in the days of all the moon landings and knew some of the names. All long forgotten I'm afraid.
Those were fairly quick edits, but I did mask the moon and run the background through Neat Image to lose some of the grain before sharpening.

31 Oct 2007Mark, thanks. The moon does look a bit squashed at the moment, but the shadows are good once it's gone past being full.
