I'm getting used to seeing the cormorant at our local village pond, but when I arrived this morning there was no sign of him anywhere on the water. Eventually I scanned the skies, and at the far end of the pond noticed a surprising figure perched high in the treetops.

This was too good an opportunity to miss, especially with such good light. I moved in for some closer shots.

And then finally, some movement…

That's my kind of good start to the day!

What an amazing set of pictures! The sequence of the flight is wonderful. I have never seen a cormorant so clearly. The pattern of the wings against the background – wow! Definitely the start of a good day!

  2. On your photographs it look like a huge bird but in real it is not much bigger than the average duck. Nice photos

  3. Magdalena, that young cormorant has been providing some great photo opportunities over the past month, especially early morning.

  4. Darko, they do have a much bigger wingspan than ducks and are heavier; but I know what you mean. Bird size is very deceptive. Egrets can look really tall and elegant, until you put them next to a herring gull when they suddenly look quite small. It's an illusion of shape I think.

  5. Erwin, thanks!

  6. Excellent flight sequence! It looks like it knows where it is going!

  7. Adele, thanks! Maybe it was trying to spot fish from up there. That's certainly the direction it's heading.

  8. Beautiful Photos
