Well it rained again today. All day, without any noticeable break. Floods aren't a problem where I live. We're at the top of the South Downs (several hundred feet elevation), rather than in the valley, but by all accounts the situation in other parts of the country is pretty bad, with over quarter of a million people without piped drinking water and many others with no power. When our region was hit a few years ago it took about a year for some homes to be made habitable again.

So for me it's just the mild misery of grey days in the middle of summer, and lost opportunities to spend some decent time out with the camera.

Rain falling on the dew pond

The snails are thriving in the damp conditions

And I even had a rare sight of a toad in the garden pond

The shy fox cub flashed by in the drizzle this evening

And of course, the regular cub emerged in his waterproof coat

  1. Well, the toad looks in its element 😆

  2. The floods in Englnad are in the news here.

  3. Yeah it looks really bad and my family friends who live in Oxfordshire and the Thames Valley area are worried that the floods will get to them, i just pray that it dosent.

This Summer has been dreadful, the only thing good about it i suppose is the longer daylight hours available for firemen and the army to work longer to clear the water each day, a long and frustrating battle.

In Bognor Regis iam ok but in Rural Sussex around the Pulborough area i think the River Arun has overflowed as it usually does when this thing happens, if iam on the train to Gatwick this weekend i will take a few pics of it/

I do worry about the wildlife aswell, all the young baby animals at this time of year, i hope they manage to survive.

  4. And here in Serbia, we are choking in temperatures above 40C (today we are promised 43C), fires in forests and lack of drink water in some parts. This is 8th tropical day and the forecast says tomorrow will be better, but after that…
Anyway, looking at your photos is a kind of refreshing 🙂
    I wish I am in toad's place

  5. Darko, I'd read about the heatwave. It seems that something called the 'jet stream' is further south this year which means we're getting plenty of rain, and eastern Europe is burning up.

Mark – I didn't see much signs on the Brighton/London route at the weekend, but I heard some roads round our way turned into small rivers briefly last week. Lewes seems to have survived this time, though Uckfield got hit again.

Andy – crumbs it must be bad if it made news in the US 😉

Adele – that's the second toad this year, and it's young by the look of it so with luck they'll increase in numbers.

We had some sunshine today, but the clouds and rain are forecast again.
