Just a quick picture post as I've only just come inside from the garden. I was filming yet another leopard slug mating sequence at the back of the garden, but was distracted by a host of newts out hunting. I counted at least eight foraging over the ground cover, and suspect more were hidden underneath. Here's a trio of shots (there are many more).

  1. Interesting contrast. Did you made those during night?

  2. Darko, yes they were taken at around 1.00 in the morning with flash.

  3. Ben, thanks. They do look similar, but newts are amphibians and are smaller than geckos (which are true lizards). These ones were about 6-8cm nose to tail.

  4. Lovely pictures; they look a lot like the Thai geckos. Just a different colour, I think. Or should I call the mosquito hunting relative a newt too?
I just know the proper Thai name – ChinChock.

  5. Nice shots! 🙂 Your garden is becoming a newt city, it would seem!

  6. Adele, there's a little patch of ground cover at the back of the garden where the newts have appeared. The same plants are also covered in tiny newborn snails. I have a feeling that this is not coincidence!

Ah… Those are the baby geckos, size. I love them. They're cute, and seem to eat insects! 😀
