The weather has improved slightly. It's still windy, and showers are still in the air, but by late afternoon the sun had appeared and I headed out for an early evening walk. I started at the local pond, but then headed out to the fields. There were plenty of sheep grazing, and the horses were back in their field. And then, in the distance, I saw something moving slowly across the thick grass. A large male fox, with a dark reddish-black coat.

That's uncropped, but inevitably he continued to move away from me. He paused to mark the territory.

Then continued on his way, strolling past an unconcerned horse.

He stopped briefly at the rear of the field by a hedge, before disappearing through it.

I continued watching, and located a second fox. A vixen, by the look of her.

There's a plentiful stock of rabbits in the field, which is no doubt why they are there. They have many mouths to feed!

The main group then scattered, but I stayed and scanned the fields and was rewarded when another adult appeared at the bottom of the field… where the rabbits live.

The rabbit escaped down a hole this time and the fox headed for the woodland fringe. No doubt though it will be back.

  1. Ok… but what were magpies doing there? :left:

  2. Excellent!! Reminds of my meadow fox sightings…which I haven't had for ages because it's easier to walk Khamsin elsewhere. Hmm.

Nice to see such a dark fox.

  3. Adele, it was lovely to see them all together like that. That's the darkest fox I've seen to date. He looked very impressive, even from a distance.

  4. Thanks Erwin!

  5. Darko, magpies get everywhere and as Adele has shown in the past have a strange relationship with foxes.

  6. Nice set
