After sunshine, wind and rain this week, a new addition to our current weather… sleet. I'd like to say it was snow, but that suggests nice fluffy flakes drifting gently to the ground. This was driving rain and sleet, arriving early morning just in time for the journey to work.

Inevitably I tried to photograph it; and I think equally inevitable was the poor result. It's marginally better converted to monochrome.

As for the regulars on the pond, the white goose was the easiest to photograph in what was truly appalling light. These shots were taken at ISO 3200.

Two cormorants were out on the water (and now I think of it, I don't think I even saw a gull).

And that was about it for the day. It's much calmer outside now, but cold :smurf: No sign of any foxes yet this evening either.

  1. Sometimes flash helps to capture falling rain or sleet.
    But sometimes it doesn't.
    Sigh!

  2. Dark background of course helps, and some object in front ground where to focus, to make the snow flakes at that distance focused as well. But yes, challenging task it is.

  3. And, you still brought to us these fabulous photos! Keep warm and please do remember to take extra care in your commute. :coffee:

  4. They don't mind sleet 😀

  5. Darko, sea birds are amazingly well protected against the weather. I guess they have to be.

  6. Erwin, thanks!

  7. Sami, the shot was really just to prove it was snowing (sort of).

  8. Cynthia, it's only a 10 minute commute but if the weather is really bad the roads get blocked. This was just cold and miserable! 😀

  9. dW, that's a good point. I didn't have my external flash with me and I suspect the camera flash won't get past the lens. But worth a shot if I'm stuck like that again.

  10. we got the little tiny white sleety things too then about inch of snow, fluffy and light.
Like the white duck/goose? Not playing duck duck goose here, promise. here is a song my mom taught me as a child you all know:

    I'm a little white duck
    sitting in the water
    a little white duck
    doing what her oughter
took a bite of a lily pad
then he laughed and he said
It's grand to be a little
white duck sitting in the water
    quack quack quack!!

weird how childhood comes back to me so easily and I have no idea if I ate 2day.

  11. There was still some snow in the North Downs when I came home on Saturday. And it's frozen hard underfoot :smurf:

  12. Even if you're not happy with the results of the first one, it definately captures the atmosphere of the day. It looks so cold and damp, I almost shiver!

  13. Kathy, that one's a goose, but the ducks were there as well. 🙂

  14. Lois, that's about right. Sometimes a photo really is just a record of what it's like out there.

  15. Adele, it was icy this morning, but has thawed out during the day.

  16. Oh, BTW, the header is too CUTE! with the snow and the fox as Santa Fox!!! Love it! So talented and creative you are! (Yoda-speak)

  17. yes, lovely sharp shot of the GOOSE! Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat…… I kid.
