It's the weekend. The sun is shining. Chelsea are playing on Sunday. So Saturday afternoon looked good for roaming out on the Downs, camera at the ready.

And so it was… until the clouds rolled in, the sky darkened, and a few drops of rain began to fall. I'd wandered almost a mile into the valley, having grabbed just a couple of quick shots on my way to one of the better kestrel hunting grounds, when the rain began in earnest. So much less to show than I'd hoped. In fact all I managed were a grabbed shot of a passing kestrel, and a small colony of shaggy ink caps.

Tonight it's dry. It's November 6th, the day after Bonfire Night (last night, the 5th, Lewes in Sussex held its annual celebrations… see this Flickr group). Nothing quite so wild where we are (just a few miles away), but there were still plenty of fireworks this evening.

Enough to keep the foxes away, but they'll soon be back.

Camera note: kestrel and inkcaps taken with the Canon 40D and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens. I used the EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM lens for the fireworks.

  1. Dull grey days are tough to use. I don't suppose the kestrels like them either, considering how much they rely on their eyesight!

  2. At least some nice fireworks 😀

  3. Nice photos as always
The mushrooms and the first firework shots are my favorites.

  4. Adele, nothing worse than dull days apart from dull WET days, or dull, wet and WINDY days! This week looks a mixed bag at best! Will have to see how it goes.

  5. Gonzalo, thanks! I think my favourite shot is the last one (more smoke than firework).

  6. Darko, once a year I get my chance to try to photograph them. One day I'll may actually go and watch a proper display (it would be a lot easier than hoping a neighbour is having a party). :hat:

  7. Erwin, thanks!

  8. Nice Photos
