Another quick post today. The moorhen chicks seem to be doing well, spending as much time out of the nest as in it, while the adults are being kept busy finding a constant supply of food.

These photos are all cropped to some extent and were taken from a sufficiently safe distance to avoid disturbing the birds.

  1. Cute, funny chicks … and mum looks about as good as a moorhen can look, considering. Those crazy, underripe asparagus legs always break me up.

    1. dW, moorhens and coots have the strangest legs and feet. I believe it helps them on the soft silt.

  2. Food for four of them, parents must be very busy!

    1. Darko, there are more than four but some of them were swimming with the other adult. I think probably somewhere between 7 and 9 chicks, though they may not all survive the many and various predators.
