The early bird may (usually) catch the worm, but in this case the worm was a fish. Not a great shot, but I'm sure that the little egret is not going to worry about that.

I did manage to get a little closer after that, probably as close as I've yet managed with egrets. They are somewhat self-conscious birds and tend not to hang around for too long. One day I'll see one in decent light.

That was this morning. Tonight I've been pond-gazing. This is one of the innumerable damselfly nymphs.

And there are young newts…

To close, a special guest appearance (brief, but I'm happy) by Shutterbug the fox. He's looking well, but didn't hang around. It was just a stately walk through the garden and then out via one of the fences.

  3. I didn't know these birds are called as 'egret' :sherlock:

EDIT: Around her it is called something like 'noble heron'.

  4. Erwin, thanks!

  5. Jill, they're great to watch. I got some more shots today which I'll to post later.

  6. Darko, yes. It was good to see him again. 🙂

  7. Sami, I'm not sure how they got that name, but yes they are part of the heron family.

  8. Another nice series. I saw a couple of egrets at Minsmere but didn't get a good shot. Surprisingly tricky birds, all things considered.

Nice to see Shutterbug again 🙂

  9. D'awww! Your fox visitors are the next best thing to domesticated. So sweet.

  10. Egrets are one of my favorite birds. I love their yellow feet – it makes me think of the rain boots we wore as children.

  11. Adele, the recent shots are the first time I've managed to get anything like into proper range to photograph them, and of course they play havoc with camera metering.

It had been quite a while without any foxes, so his return was very welcome.

  12. Felix, thanks!

  13. Lois, oh I so much agree about the egret's wonderfully incongruous feet. 🙂

  14. A relieve…. and beautiful shots
