This is a bit of a variety pack, once again lacking any coherence but an opportunity to quickly cover the past few days. Just one photo from Friday. It's a skylark. It had been perched on the branches to the right of the shot, but took off just as I was lining up the shot.

Saturday brought more pictures of our toad. He (?) scrambled out of the pond and along the pebbles before disappearing under cover of the surrounding plants. This is a brief sequence.

The toad was back in the pond tonight, but of more interest was a row of damselfly nymphs lined up on the side of the pond. They look ready to emerge.

Now for the cute stuff 😀

There were ducklings and goslings at Falmer pond…

The goslings are growing up fast, and cute as they are the real weekend highlight was on the trail cam. This is from around 3.00am on Sunday morning. The first glimpse of a fox cub this year. The adult (seen briefly at the start of the clip) is a vixen who is caught regularly on the trail cam but has successfully evaded the stills camera for the past couple of months.

Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 7D. The skylark was taken with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens, the toad was photographed with the EF 24-105 F4L IS USM lens, the damselfly nymph with the EF 100mm f/2.8L macro IS USM and the duckling and goslings with the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens (supported by a monopod).

  1. Excellent! And very cute! (That word again :right:) I still haven't seen any cubs this year, but that one looks pretty healthy!

The nymph is great as well  and well done for the skylark. Much easier heard than photographed :insane:

  2. Adele, it was a real treat to see the cub on the cam (though it seems to be out at between 3.00 and 4.00am so the chances of a direct sighting are slim at the moment. We're really lucky with skylarks. They are in all the fields around here and are so active it's impossible to miss them.

  3. Erwin, thanks!

  4. Always great to see the first of this year's cubs on your blog.

  5. Mick, thanks! Would love to get a photo though.

  6. Lovely
