One day I will go to the races (and will get to see a race finish), but for now I'm happy to watch from outside the race track (not least because the track starts out in public land and offers splendid vantage points for taking photos. I've done this before, but am slowly learning. I used a shorter lens (200mm), and set the camera to shoot in high resolution jpegs (which allows a continuous burst of 60 shots, or around 10 seconds). The camera was set to manual mode (with AF on), at 1/1000s, f/6.3, ISO 640.

For those interested in racing detail, this was the 5.00 at Brighton on 5th August 2010. The winner was Dashing Doc (13/8 fav), number 1 in the photos. The shots were taken in the early part of the race.

This being the race track, there were kestrels about as well. And being summer, they were snacking on the local bush crickets.

In the garden, Cheeky was back tonight (she has various sleeping spots around the garden), but this time she was with the young male cub.

Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 40D. The horses were photographed with the EF 200mm f/2.8L II USM lens, the kestrels with the EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens, and the foxes with the EF 24-105 F4L IS USM. No macros!

  1. Do you think they will leave when they grow up? Except Cheeky, who found herself pretty comfortable in your garden 😀

  2. Nice photos 🙂

  3. Darko, yes they'll leave the immediate area. With luck either Bold or Cheeky (or both) will stay around. One of them usually does. 😉
