A beautiful winter sun heralded the shortest day of the year (but not the 'end of the world'). It was one of those mornings when you expect the unexpected. A pheasant, looking for a vantage point, perches on a roof.
A black-headed gull guards the 'No Fishing' sign.
And then the fun begins. A small group of cormorants were fishing at the far end of the pond. Their target? The local carp.
A cormorant surfaces with fish
A second cormorant spies easy pickings
A tussle ensues
The carp makes a break…
A cormorant lunges to retrieve it
The end is inevitable
Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 7D and EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens.

21 Dec 2012It nearly managed to get away with all the distraction of the other bird; but not quite. If this goes on too long the pond will run out of fish 🙁

1 Jan 2013Adele, I'm not sure even the greediest gulls could compete with these once they get going.
