I spent an hour today at the local dew pond photographing the dragonflies. It's a perfect spot, created just a few years ago as part of a conservation programme to generate new habitats to compensate for the loss of green space when a new building went up nearby.

19 Jul 2007Thanks! I was pleased with the third one as well. I very nearly got whole wingspan in focus. It just drfits slightly in the foreground.

19 Jul 2007Really nice- I know how hard it is to keep 'wild insects' in focus. The third shot looks like he (assuming those are claspers at the end of his abdomen) has posed perfectly for you- a relatively uncluttered shot.
The slight wing-damage is also a good sign you haven't cheated by gluing the poor guy to his perch 🙂

19 Jul 2007Wonderful pictures. Next time I need to check the identity of a British dragonfly I'll know where to come 🙂 The third picture of the chaser is my favourite too.

19 Jul 2007Chthonid – yes it's a male. Well spotted! The female is yellow. I tried to get some more shots today, but with much less success.
Adele – I'm beginning to learn the names of some of them but I usually check out the Wild About Britain galleries to be sure.

🙂 Yes, I am an arthropod-geek…

Dragonflies are tricky the way they move around a lot- also any breezes can ruin a shot. Timing, patience and a good helping of luck can be the key…
