The weather is back to its tricks (i.e. more rain), but the afternoon turned out dry, with a little sunshine. I headed out to the local fields to see what was going on around the local farms.

The horses were grazing lazily.

And the sheep were being sheep…

The wheat was 'crackling'. I spent ages peering through the stalks to see what was causing it, but in the end came to the conclusion that it was the wheat itself making the noise, possibly drying out after the recent rain.

There were plenty of small birds hopping in and out of the wheat, and one rather large bird (a pheasant) which I disturbed as I walked by. This made a mighty racket as it took off.

I saw a couple of buzzards in the distance, and a kestrel flew over.

And finally, as I was heading back to the car I came acrsoss some fledgling blackbirds out foraging.

  1. I've never herd crackling wheat :left: On the other hand, I can't remember when I was walking by the wheat field last time 😛

  2. Darko, it was a first time for me too. Very strange and really difficult to locate where it was coming from (all around!).

  3. It's beginning to feel like late summer. Harvest will soon be here.
