Just a quick post script to the previous entry. This is the video footage of the kestrel devouring the shrew.
There's also a high definition version.
Camera note: filmed with a Canon 7D and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens.

8 May 2011Sure devoured that shrew.
What a great capture! Was it a little cold? The bird seemed to be puffed up and tucked one foot under.
Great stuff!

9 May 2011Brendan, thanks! It was a great sighting. I see the kestrels a lot and occasionally watch them with their kill, but this was certainly the closest I've been able to get.

9 May 2011Andy, it was fairly cool as it was still quite early. I think it may have just been resting that foot. The shrew was pinned with the other one and it was using the right foot (hand?) to manipulate the prey. It was a good start to the day!

9 May 2011Adele, the video is good. It takes some getting used to… the fixed viewing screen can be a bit awkward, and unlike camcorders it doesn't adjust the focus (though depth of field is pretty good).
