Magpie on a grassy mound

I managed to dodge the showers today, though it was extremely wet underfoot. There's a good variety of birds around at the moment. The black-headed gulls are present in large numbers over the fields, and on the edge of the woodland there are numerous redwings which have a tendency to avoid open flight. Or maybe that's just when I'm around. There were various finches as well as rooks, crows and jackdaws, but my favourite sequence was this series of a magpie exploring a small grassy mound alongside a very muddy path. I was a fair distance away, and these are all moderate crops. All the photos are in the January Birds (2008) album.

Camera note: all shots taken with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens

It could almost be looking for a fox cache!

It's quite impossible to go anywhere off the tarmac here now without finding oneself either splashing through swamp-like grassland or sliding around on a veneer of mud. If all the rain were snow… :eyes:

It was even worse today, so I didn't even attempt it. Water pooling everywhere.

Better forecast for today, but yesterday (Tueday) was dire. It's going to be very muddy out there today though 😀
