These are a couple of photos left over from the recent visit to Arundel WWT. They’re of a moorhen, which was lurking in very deep shade. Included here because I really like the shots.

One sighting I don’t mention in the previous post was the sand martins (a first for me) which were flocking around the hide where we were watching the great white egret. There’s a sizeable colony which nests in the walls of the hide. It was tricky getting a decent angle to photograph them (too many people pointing cameras and scopes out to the egret), but a couple of grabbed shots give an idea of the scene.

And one more shot of the water vole!

  1. Nice ones, Words … we had a spell of sand martins down at the local beach … a huge rainstorm caused a big washout of the beach, leaving a channel with two banks. It wasn’t 24 hours before both banks were riddled with holes.
The moorhen shot appeals to me, too … I think the shade enhances the colours.
The vole, as usual, is beautiful.

    1. dW, I don’t think I’d seen sand martins before this. The hide was intentionally made for them to nest in. Clearly works!

I could barely see the moorhen through the lens, but I do like ‘dark’ shots. As you say, it brings out the colours so well. Where possible I tend to underexpose slightly.

  2. I like those photos of moorhen, it looks as it was a night photo with flash 🙂

    1. Darko, thanks! I see what you mean. The corner was indeed very dark, and the light source (sun) very strong, so it makes sense.
