It snowed today. Lots of it if you're English, but probably not worthy of mention in most of the rest of the world. It was enough though to cause traffic chaos, close schools and universities and to give us our very modest taste of winter. Up here at the top of the South Downs (elevation approximately 500') we do tend to bear the brunt of whatever does fall. The roads freeze, traffic grinds (or slides) to a halt, and for a day or so we're more or less cut off from the city and the coast.

The foxes don't mind though, not now they're sporting fine winter coats. I think this is Shutterbug, photographed through a closed window during the morning (hence the slightly dodgy quality).

I've also put together a series of trailcam clips, starting from around 7.00am and running through to early afternoon to give a sense of how the day developed. Shutterbug (as might be apparent from the photos) puts in an appearance.

Camera note: both shots taken with the Canon 7D and EF 100mm f/2.8L macro IS USM lens through a double-glazed window. Video from the Bushnell Trophy Cam HD

  1. Well, at least you got some snow … we've had precious little this year, just like last year, and I suspect our real cold snap will come just in time to spoil the orchard crops … apples, cherries and the like, so the prices will skyrocket again. It does give one a wry sense of satisfaction to know that all the climate-change deniers who accepted funding from the industrialists will be spending it on food. I think our drought will repeat this summer, and the former breadbasket of the world will become a net food-importer.

  2. those photos are awesome!

you mustn't be worried about that- we will hope for an absolute LOVELY spring! let's count on it!

  7. I'm hearing that Norfolk has been practically sub-Arctic for the last week but yes, it is rather milder down here. Nice to see the foxes against the white background even so.

  8. Jill, thanks! I'm glad I managed one fox in the snow this year. :psmurf:

  9. dW, I'm somewhat ambivalent on climate change to be honest, but then I remember being told endlessly about the 'coming ice age' when I was growing up. These things stick. Fair to say that the weather has been somewhat unusual in recent years, though we've had more proper seasons over the past 3 or 4 years than I recall in the previous 10. We'll only end up importing food because of overconsumption.

  10. Darko, we have such variety here. There was a report of a lynx earlier today (turned out to be a photo taken in Canada 😉 )

  11. Felix, that's probably the effect of shooting through double-glazed windows. 😉

  12. Adele, I can well imagine how bleak Norfolk must get at times like this. The weather must just sweep across with nothing to slow it down or disrupt it.
