The continuing freezing weather and unrelenting gloom has kept the camera wrapped up all weekend. Nothing yesterday, nothing today. That made me think: What were things like 12 months ago?

Well, a year ago we were in the middle of an unusually mild March, with blue skies in the day…

Golden colours in the late afternoon…

And perfect sunsets…

Roll back another year to 2011 and things were not much different.

March 2013 is lining up to be the coldest March in 50 years or so. Biting winds (well, wind is expected March), grey skies, hints of snow even this far south (we had a few flakes last night) and the risk of more later in the week.

It's not usually as bad as this, and just to convince myself that it really was better in the past I've checked the blog entries for the same dates going back over the past 4 years.

  1. Cold here, too Words … our temps are in the 30°F range, or below. A light touch of snow today (just a few flakes in the air), and we've still got plenty of snow cover on the ground, and yesterday, I noticed ice far offshore (not bergs, or anything like that, but big broken sheets of rotting ice). Yesterday, in protected spots, I did notice some liquid water.
Last year, March was full of days in the 80°F range … very pleasant, but extremely destructive to the orchard crops, because April and May turned cold and killed the setting fruit.

  2. Strange winter, indeed. Snow in northern Serbia, too. Here, magnolias are about to bloom :left:

  3. It's good to have photographs to remember the far-off days when it was possible to go outside without two jumpers and a Saskatchewan-grade coat. Still, if it's any consolation, I checked the temperature in Grasslands NP this morning and it's -20c, with a windchill of -23c.

  4. Very nice shots

  5. Erwin, thanks!

  6. dW, that's cold. We're pretty wimpish when it comes to bad weather. We never expect it, always act shocked when it arrives, and complain annually that it's all we get. And then if we do get some sun we say it's too hot to do anything. Hope things improve at your end.

  7. Darko, winter should be long gone, though this is from April 2008.

  8. Adele, it's certainly the wind chill that does it. The temperatures would be tolerable otherwise. And remind me not to visit Saskatchewan at this time of year! :smurf:
