The unseasonally cold weather continues. This far south we've so far missed the worst of it, but the temperature is struggling to get above 0ΒΊ.

The fountains were freezing…

…and the lakes were transformed into skating rinks (for birds)

The freeze is not (yet) quite complete… tomorrow it may be different.

And of course squirrels were among the more active animals, but then they do have a nice warm coat. They show precious little sign of hibernating though!

I expect to see snow by the morning. London is due for an overnight fall. The Downs may escape… in a few hours I'll have my answer.

  1. Always made me wonder just what birds thought when they landed on the ice like that! Must be a bit of a shock, don't you think!

  4. Oh, that's what grass looks like. I forgot :right: I just took Khamsin out for a walk and was sinking in above my knees in some places! I hope your return commute wasn't too insane last night – mine took six and a half hours! πŸ˜₯

Lovely shot of the frozen fountain πŸ™‚

  5. Robin, I remember watching a swan struggle on ice last year. Almost painful to see, but it eventually managed to slide its way to the breaks in the frozen surface. I feel for their toes :smurf:

  6. Marilyn, thanks!

  7. Adele, as you'll see from tonight's post I didn't make it back at all. London was relatively quiet today and at least the trains were running: slowly, intermittently, and eventually not at all, but I'm home so I'm happy!

  8. Darko, they sure do. But they're very good on it and seem to dominate the other birds. πŸ˜€

  9. Nice frozen fountain photos, i have been busy snapping away and was totally amazed y how much snow there was! :yikes:

  10. Mark, it's certainly been an interesting few days. The lakes were frozen again today (or still frozen, probably). It may take time for a proper thaw. There was still snow on the ground near Gatwick.
