It's inevitable at this time of year that I'll be seeing less of the foxes. The cubs have all but disappeared to new hunting grounds, and although the trusty old dog fox wanders through as he pleases he doesn't always stay for long. But the garden and local area are still a wonderful habitat for wildlife, and with this unseasonally fantastic weather (20 degrees C today), I took the opportunity to see what else was lurking.

A chaffinch
house sparrow was singing away this morning

The Common Darters were posing like old pros

And even a bluebottle joined in!

A Red Admiral showed up, determined not be outdone

But the highlight was in the afternoon when we went for a walk on the local downs…

My first close-up sighting of a kestrel

Even better, it took to the air

I just love the way they hover. Makes photography a lot easier!
