I'm starting today's post with a couple of fairly unremarkable shots of ducks. I'm including them as they were taken on a small 'ornamental' pond where I work. It was early morning (around 7.50am) and the pond isn't renowned for attracting wildlife.

The gulls were taken later in the day, along the coast at Hastings. First, one of a black-headed gull preening itself on the shingle beach. These are among the smaller of our gulls, and to my mind the prettiest. Their fine narrow beak is also much less threatening.

The rest are shots of great black-backed gulls which were present in much greater numbers than I usually see at the Brighton end of the coast. These are large, thick-set gulls with extremely powerful beaks. They often bully other gulls to steal food but were reasonably well behaved today.

Several were resting in small hollows alongside the beached boats in the local boatyard. You can't see them in these shots, but they are there somewhere.

  1. Damned difficult to single any of these out for especial praise, Words … each one seems as good (or better) than the last.

  2. They are there, waiting for food to come to sight :ninja:

  3. dW, thanks. I like the boats. They're so colourful and it made a change to be photographing something other than wildlife!

  4. Darko, yes they always have an eye open for easy pickings. 🙂
