This may be but a brief interlude in all the winter grey, but today at least it was bright. Cold, but sunny. Even the winds were low, although you wouldn't think so looking at the sea crashing into the defences at Rottingdean.
Down at ground level the local pipits were busy. This first shot has an oddly urban feel to it, or maybe a lone character caught in a virtual game world searching for a way out.
This is a more conventional shot of the same bird.
The black-headed gulls were active too.
Less numerous is this next gull, which I think is a common gull in its winter plumage. It's smaller than the herring gulls, and lacks the herring gull's red spot on the beak.
One bird I always look out for is the fulmar. Surprisingly they were largely absent today, but a single bird did make a few passes at the cliffs allowing me to get these shots.
Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 7D and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens.

San and me are going to Tofino next week. Hopefully there will be sun and big waves around 😎

18 Dec 2011You managed to capture the world as a pipit probably sees it.

I love that top shot – the colours gp so well together and the scene is nicely dramatic. Looks like a neat place to visit!

19 Dec 2011dW, thanks! I was pleased with the b-h gull shot. The light was great, and the grey clouds added some texture and contrast.

19 Dec 2011Darko, thanks! Have a great time both of you. There's some great wildlife on VI, but some of it is seriously big! Take care 🙂

19 Dec 2011Felix, thanks! The whole scale of that shot appealed to me. It always helps to get down to their level (and never mind the passers-by who can't even see what you're photographing).

19 Dec 2011I think the biggest ones are deep in their sleep  Even though some stories from Vancouver deny that :left:

19 Dec 2011Marilyn, there's not really much there other than the walk along the side of the cliff, but it's very local and always dramatic when the sea is high.

19 Dec 2011Sami, thanks! I was pleased with the fulmar where you can see its back. I get far fewer of those because they are usually too close and I'm underneath them.

20 Dec 2011:yes: I figured that out as well. So, congratulations for that shot
