It can hardly escaped anyone's notice in the UK that it was windy today. What's odd is that it didn't seem too bad, but the evidence of damage was all around. Locally, there are numerous reports of fallen trees, roads were gridlocked for much of the day across the country, and even my own very gentle 15 minute drive home extended to well over an hour. The single road was blocked by an overturned lorry so I had to divert through the town where traffic was at a standstill.

We were fortunate to avoid any serious damage, so the only photographic evidence I have is the damage to our pergola and a small portion of fencing. All very easy to fix.

Minor damage

But I know the real reason you're here is for news about the foxes. Sightings have been scarce (bad weather doesn't help) and I haven't yet been able to collect any medicine. I hadn't seen the old fox since the weekend, but he showed up again briefly tonight. This photo shows rather more clearly the extent of the mange.

Clear signs of mange on the rear flanks

With luck we'll be able to start treating him at the weekend. The treatment requires weekly doses (3 or 4 weeks) so is tricky unless he turns up regularly. We can't leave the medicine unattended, so we may have some lengthy evenings watching an empty garden over the next few weeks. That's becoming somewhat of an early year habit. We gave him some food this evening to keep him interested.

  1. Glad things are no worse. My journey home yesterday took almost three hours, involved jumping between two trains and two buses, and when I finally got home to the village there was a massive tree down in my road. It still hasn't been cleared and there was a power outage this afternoon – the power's only just returned 😥

Nice profile shot of the dogfox. Hope he starts coming at a more regular time.

What a lovely website, and so wonderful to see how you care for animals. I have a friend who needs to relaocate a number of foxes all from the same den we think, from his land to elsewhere. Are you or any of your readers aware of any charities that might be able to help? I can be contacted on Tracy672@hotmail.com
