It looks like the bad weather really is on its way out, and this evening was the first in some weeks when the skies have been clear. The garden is quiet apart from the surfeit of slugs which have been thriving in the damp conditions. And as though we didn't have enough of them, I caught a pair of leopard slugs in their mating dance.

For those who have never seen it, the leopard slugs suspend themselves from a bungee-type rope and then entwine their bodies and sexual organ to create a shimmering bell. They are hermaphroditic so both slugs are impregnating the other simultaneously.

  1. Always strange to see this :left:

  2. Definitely interesting.

  3. dW, I'd love to get some decent film footage but it's very tricky to light the scene for video.

  4. Darko, yep! It has to be about the oddest bit of behaviour we get to see in the garden.
