Another short post, starting with one of the several slow worms that share the garden. This one has taken up residence in a relatively exposed area (not sensible) and was out enjoying the unexpected sunshine on Saturday. There's a small colony of slow worms hidden away in our compost bin. They are thriving, but are almost impossible to photograph.
We've also got several coal tits visiting, though I'm yet to get a photograph of them. The goldfinches are also regulars this year (in greater number than previously).
The real stars remain the foxes and last night we were woken at about 3.30am by Mama Vixen's loud calling. Fox calls always sound somewhat desperate but I'm not aware of anything untoward. The cubs were also active and the video tonight is more of their playful antics through the night. This is drawn from several clips.
Camera note: slow worm taken with the Canon 7D and EF70-300mm 4.5-5.6 DO IS lens; goldfinch with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS; and video via the Bushnell Trophy Cam.

21 May 2012Well, they certainly seem to be having fun.
The slow-worms aren't annelids, are they? They're reptiles?

21 May 2012The only wildlife I saw yesterday was a big wolf spider. And San said it is twice smaller than usual :eyes:
Always like to see goldfinches, that red part on a face makes nice contrast

22 May 2012The slow worms must be relieved to finally experience some vaguely summer-like weather.

23 May 2012dW, yes that's right: slow worms are legless lizards (Anguis fragilis). They're quite common over here, though they can be tricky to find as they like dark corners.

23 May 2012Adele, let's hope the decent weather stays around for a while. The last 10 weeks have been really dire!

23 May 2012Darko, a wolf is a wolf even if it's a spider and a bit small! 😀 The goldfinches are quite small, but very striking with that red face.
