I missed the foxes this evening. They've been in and out, but I've been getting on with things indoors so didn't manage to get any new photos.

Instead I've been sorting out which photo to put up as my Picture of the Day. I decided on this one from a couple of night ago. Not the cutest shot, but a good capture of the fox escaping over the wall with an egg. But as you can see, it's a little on the dark side.

The picture was taken in a particularly awkward spot. It's just by our back door, but the walls are painted white, and my camera struggles in getting the lighting right. The reflection of the flash on the predominantly white background tends to leave the overall image fairly dark. The camera is fooled into thinking there is more light on the subject than is really the case. So this one needed some sharpening up.

The first step was to generally lighten the image with a flash-fill setting on PhotoImpact. I took that up about 30 notches. That left the picture somewhat bland, with little colour definition. To correct that I used the lighting effect, which adds a slight yellow tint. I also increased the exposure slightly at that point and spread the enhanced lighting across the whole image. I then cropped the photo to a base size of 1600 x 1200 pixels. The final step was to repeat the enhanced lighting on the cropped image, but only on the area of the fox. As you can see, the overall effect is much improved. The image here is reduced to 500 pixel width. On my site (for one day only) it's 800 x 600.

  1. A pleasure 😉

Generally I don't play around with images too much, just a crop and sometimes a touch of lighting. The fox is just too patient a poser for that. Most nights I get a dozen or so shots, but I have been known to take 60+ in an evening. Out of that lot there's usually something that's ok. But I didn't get too many on this occasion and I like to use action shots when I get a half-way decent one.

  2. HI Words,

    wow big difference thanks 🙂

you have the best shots, from the looks of the foxes I really believe they are at home on your land.

    thanks for posting

Do you know a good image manipulation program for palm.
I just want to crop some images and maybe lighten or rotate
    simple stuff.
About my earlier question, GSPDA Xplore M98 does not support java, so
no Opera for me. I still haven't tried Blazer, but I think my problems aren't w/ Xiino, they're with ChinaMobile and GPRS. Just TimeOut. Not enough people use their phones here to go to m.google.com so it takes a longer path &tc. I'll just cancl my gprs plan and be happy with memopad datebook, adobe reader avantgo pockettunes and a phone in one package.
