No I haven't been travelling great distances, but even the south of England has its moments, especially as the sun sets over the ocean. These were taken yesterday at Rottingdean. Quite a contrast from a week ago.

I'd gone in search of fulmars, but they were noticeable only by their absence. The pigeons were in unusually sparkling form though.

This evening I've been outside watching the Geminids. They were reasonably frequent (one very minute or so, shooting across the eastern sky) but I didn't manage any on camera. I did take a few shots of Orion, always a welcome winter visitor.

And finally, a night shot of the view from the garden. Again, a long exposure. I'm not sure it's quite so picturesque in reality. 😉

Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 40D. The Rottingdean photos were all with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens and UV filter (using the live view feature on the ones towards the sun). I used the EF 24-105 F4L IS USM lens for the night shots, mounted on a Manfrotto 458B Neotec tripod and 488RC2 ball head. The camera was triggered with a Hahnel remote control. Exposures varied, but were generally between 10 and 30 seconds.

  1. Very nice! lol you could have been to the Gold Coast and back during your busy few weeks. 😛

  2. Wow, it looks like photos from some tropical island 😀

  3. Nice. The winter sun can be great for photography. As for the night photos, I'm planning a trip out tommorow evening 🙂

  4. Lovely gold and black shots!

Nice captures of the stars! Lately, I've been bumping up the ISO and trying to get away with shorter exposures. Fighting against the star trails until I can afford a motorised mount 😉

  5. Darko, if only! It was bitterly cold out there :smurf:

  6. Adele, thanks! I'd meaning to photograph Orion for a while. Last night was a good opportunity. Nice and clear. Star trails are a nuisance, but I can't see me heading down the motorized route for a while.

  7. Neil, I ought to do more at night. Look forward to seeing what you come up with. And although it's cold, at least it's dry.

  8. Mark, I wish I had been to the Gold Coast, but I'll have to continue to make do with the South Coast for the moment 😉

  9. Thanks Erwin!

  10. Beautiful set of Pict
