Another warm late summer day, and another trip out to Seven Sisters. It's funny how things change from one day to the next. Yesterday there was a noable absence of geese. Today, a large flock was happily meandering on the water.

A smaller group of dunlins was equally at home in the shallow pools.

The undoubted highlight of the afternoon was the little egrets, which were out in relatively large numbers. These are a few of the better shots.

I grabbed this final shot of a bird as it flew over. I couldn't see immediately what it was, but it looked strange. No wonder. It's a juvenile herring gull with a plastic bag wrapped round its leg. This will certainly hamper it if it cannot get untangled. In many cases simple items of rubbish, from bags to bottles and drink cans can result in the painful death of wildlife. So keep it tidy, and take it home (it's never as heavy on the return journey, so there's no excuse).

  1. It looks like the expedition was worthwhile then Words. Plenty to see and photograph.

The littering that can occur in even pristine places is however sad (and potentially tragic). In the place we shifted to, I ended up removing 3 garbage-bags of rubbish from the bush behind us. It was utterly bewildering that such a natural area would be treated like a dumping ground.

  2. That's a great portrait of the egret with the light going through its wings

How anyone can think the countryside is a tip is beyond me. It's sad, and dangerous. Khamsin trod on a splinter of glass last year and that must happen to foxes and badgers more frequently than we know.

  3. Chthonid, it's a great spot (and so typically English that there's even a farmhouse tea room). Generally it is fairly tidy there, but I'm astonished at the dumping that goes on in more remote places. Not just litter, but serious fly tipping.

  4. Erwin, thanks!

  5. Adele, I was pleased with the backlit egret. Broken glass is a real curse and must account for at least some of the limping foxes I see.

  6. Interesting Pict
