I don't really anything about fish behaviour, but the carp were today once again gathering in the shallows of the pond, the larger females surrounded by smaller fish (males). Presumably breeding behaviour as from what I can gather they prefer still/stagnant water for spawning.

Fox-wise it's been relatively quiet after last night's activity, and the return of the rain hasn't helped. Still I did finally get a sighting of Shutterbug this evening (no photo) as he came through the garden carrying a large quantity of food, possibly a rabbit, but it was difficult to see and he wasn't hanging around.

Later on the cubs appeared briefly. This is Shy Boy about to leap over a patch of lawn weeds.

Now for a couple more shots from last night, but of quieter moments. This is Poppy sitting in a raised flower bed.

And finally, a portrait shot of Shy Boy.

Camera note: all fox photos taken with the Canon 7D and EF 24-105 F4L IS USM lens. I used the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens for the fish.

  3. Darko, he's small, but very pretty!

  4. dW, thanks!

  5. Wonderful portraits – you must be thrilled to have such a photogenic bunch this year!

  6. They have to have fairly still water, Words, or it's the fish equivalent of coitus interruptus. "Shooting blanks", as hoi polloi would have it.

  7. Adele, it's been a good year so far with the foxes. it will be interesting to see which ones remain when autumn (the real autumn) arrives, or whether the adults will reassert themselves.

  8. dW, I know very little about fish, but what you say makes perfect sense!
