This is a great time of year for seeing (and hearing) young birds. The hedgerows are alive with the chattering of fledglings as they jostle for food, and the adults are working tirelessly to bring back adequate provisions. I'll start though with an adult, seen in local woods this morning. It's just a blackbird, but it's a nice simple shot.

Next up is another common sighting at work, a fledgling magpie. These are extremely noisy, and typically bold in their behaviour. This one was strolling around just by a nesting herring gull.

Back home in the garden, the young great tits are very active. This one seems to have recently taken a bath.

Next up is a fledgling dunnock. That wrinkled face makes it look old before its time.

Finally (and no real surprise) there is one other baby bird… the woodpecker. There was less activity there today, but I did see it pop its head out a few times, and the mother was busy in the morning.

Camera note: blackbird, magpie and woodpecker taken with the Canon 7D and EF 400mm f/5.6L USM lens. The great tit and dunnock were taken with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens.

  1. Nice, clean shots, Words.
The woodpecker chick from yesterday is better than this one, I think … easier to read.

  2. Great shots :hat:

  3. I really like the blackbird shot – ebony against a soft green backdrop

  4. At least those blackbirds are really black. Those ones we have around are more grey-brown :left:

  5. Darko, the females are brownish-brown, so we don't get it right all of the time. 😉

  6. dW, the woodpecker wasn't being nearly so cooperative. I have a feeling it may now have fledged so this may be the last shot. I'll find out when I'm back at work in the morning.

  7. Adele, thanks. It's sometimes worth the struggle of combating woodland shade. There was just enough light filtering through.

  8. Sami, thanks!
