Another quiet day, but I thought I'd post a few shots taken in Stanmer Park which sits on the edge of the South Downs National Park just outside Brighton. One of the more unusual aspects of Stanmer (which essentially is a municipal park, though quite large) is that it contains an entire village within it, including its own church.

There's also a village pond (no English village is complete without one).

Wildlife was notable by its absence (which is par for the course at the moment). This is a good spot for kestrels and sparrowhawks, but all I managed was a jackdaw and a caterpillar (which I've so far failed to identify).

And that's about it. Not a sign of anything in the garden so far this evening.

Camera note: all shots taken with the Canon 7D and EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens, except the caterpillar which was taken with the EF 100mm f/2.8L macro IS USM lens.

  1. It MIGHT be some kind of tent caterpillar, Words.

  2. Have you tried ispot? It was promoted to us by one of our guest lecturers!

  3. dW, I have a suspicion that it's a cabbage white, but I could well be wrong as it doesn't quite match most of the images I can find. Otherwise a moth of some sort. We do get tent caterpillars, but I couldn't see any signs nearby.

  4. Adele, I'll check out that site. It looks like it could be useful.

  5. I thought of cabbage white, too, but these markings seemed less distinct.

  6. A more expert view suggests the caterpillar is a Buff Tip moth.

  7. Is that duck sitting on a beaver lodge?

  8. Darko, LOL! It's probably a moorhen's nest.

  9. Do you have beavers in the Island?

  10. dW, er… no. There are some beavers (escapees) appearing in Scotland, but nothing here.
