It feels like summer again, and there were plenty of birds around to day to enjoy the much improved weather.

First up, or down (at water level) was another young moorhen. It was well hidden in the undergrowth, but quite noisy!

It wasn't the only youngster about. A fledgling sparrow was posing prettily (well, waiting impatiently to be fed, might be more accurate).

Young magpies are extremely raucous, but score low in the cuteness stakes. This one was on the perimeter fence outside the Amex Community Stadium.

The remainder of today's shots were taken in the garden, early this evening. The light was excellent and the richness of the colours shows why the ends of the day are so much more productive for photography than the middle of the day when the sun is high and the colours washed out. First a blackbird.

To close, possibly the prettiest bird of the day, a strikingly yellow chiffchaff (as ever with these, I guess it could be a willow warbler, but I'll stick with what for me is the safer option).

  1. Nice work, Words … it's nice that you've got a bit of good weather, too.
Guess what happened today, here? It RAINED! A whole ¾"! That leaves us only about 5" short for the Summer.

  2. dW, the rain must have been something of a relief, a little like our sense of justice that we finally get some sunshine. The rain may well be back next week. 🙁

  3. Lovely shots of the chiffchaff. Magpie fledglings may not be as cute as ducklings or young grebes, but their noise level is certainly top of the class :insane:

  4. Adele, thanks. The chiffchaff turns up every now and then, but it was great to get it at the end of the day. I see lots of young magpies (and hear them constantly), so I thought it was time to get a photo.
