Late last night we glanced out of the window overlooking the street and were greeted with the sight of five playful young foxes frolicking under the street lights. These photos were hand-held, manually focused, and taken on long exposures without flash through a double-glazed window. Despite that, I like them 😉

In sharp contrast, the following shots were taken at the local dewpond, at lunchtime in warm sunshine. The Emperors are enjoying the best season I can remember. The much smaller damselflies flutter around, and occasionally land on, the female as she lays her eggs.

Camera note: the foxes were photographed with the Canon 40D and EF 24-105 F4L IS USM lens. The dragonflies were all captured with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS lens.

  1. Such amazing shots you get! And they are always doing interesting things, like this one laying eggs.

  2. Street gang :bandit:

    😎

  3. Lois, it's always easier to photograph the females egg-laying (it's the only time they keep still). The main thing is not minding getting down on to the ground to get approximately level with them.

  4. Erwin, thanks. The foxes were a challenge as there was so little light. I've kept these small to make them reasonably sharp. I was really pleased to get them. The dragonflies were a lot easier to photograph.

  5. Darko, it was great to see them out playing like that! The youth of today 😉

  6. Love the street gang! I know how tough it is to get photos of foxes at night at a distance but there's a real atmosphere with those photos. And at least they're not wearing hoodies 😉

  7. Adele, they were having fun out there, running in and out of gardens, investigating a skip, fighting with each other…

  8. WOW! they should rename your street Fox Street lol! 😀

  9. Mark, that would be good 🙂

  10. Amazing, the street shots and beautiful these of the pond
