Late last night I took a last look outside and saw, at the far end of the garden, Roofy standing proudly with two cubs by his side. Now one of the cubs is much bolder than the other, and before I'd taken more than a couple of steps the nervous one had vanished into the shrubs. The second cub, although still cautious was willing to remain out while Roofy was close by. So I can confirm two cubs, though of course I'm now wondering whether there's a third lurking somewhere! I don't think so, not least because when Roofy returns with food (he wandered through again last night with something large caught somewhere nearby) the typical squeals of excitement are shortlived. The more cubs, the more noise as they scrap for food. So the fact that they go quiet quickly suggests that they are getting to the catch without too much competition.
The bold cub
That was some time after midnight last night. The next photo was taken about 8.00 this morning. Roofy is up to one of the more unusual fox activities. I have seen this before (the old dog fox used to do the same thing occasionally… like father, like son I guess). Most of the photos were badly out of focus, and I was too slow-witted to switch to manual focusing to cope with the branches. Also, it's quite dark under the tree canopy so I needed flash as well. Not the ideal combination of photographic challenges when you're only half awake. This is one of the more successful shots.
Tree climbing fox
I was awake enough though to grab the other camera and shoot some video footage. Again the quality isn't ideal and I was being careful not to put him off his stride. In the start of the sequence he's standing over a bird's nest (no doubt the attraction). I didn't see him take anything, so I suspect this was just an opportunistic excursion. You'd never guess what I saw crossing the road into Waterton village earlier this week :whistle: I was a little shocked – first fox I've ever seen west of the Mississippi! And yes, it was red, not swift. I asked a local outfitter about him and she said that Waterton is "his" town. Obviously, he's well known locally…

9 Jun 2007Well it had a red coat like a mountie but wasn't wearing a Tilley Hat :confused: – or riding a horse, for that matter!
I thought it was a bit lankier than a British fox but sizes are difficult to judge in that kind of landscape.
